his memory of the ritual 2012 gelatin silver print (series of 30 photographs) 254 x 305 mm each On Iwai Island, Setouchi, I took photos of a traditional ceremony called Kanmai, literally meaning dance of gods, which has been held once 4 years, continually for 1200 years. I asked local people to tell me their memories, and show me photos, of past ceremonies for me to seek for similar images in the present. There photos were taken in 2012 but they could be scenes seen by someone 4 x n years ago. It presents another perspective toward cultural repetition and tradition. |
